Beyond the Foam: The "Forever Chemical" Lurking in Our Closets
Welcome back to the Project Clean Up (PCU) weekly newsletter! Last week, we explored Carbon Nanotubes, a cool material reshaping engineering with its extreme strength and conductivity. This week, we're returning to the persistent presence of PFOS, focusing on a common source of exposure: textiles.
PFOS, which we've discussed in the context of firefighting foam, was also widely used to treat clothing, outdoor gear, carpets, and upholstery to make them highly resistant to water, stains, and oil. This application brought the "forever chemical" directly into our homes and daily lives. The problem is that when these textiles are washed, the PFOS can slowly leach out, entering wastewater systems and ultimately contaminating the environment. Even worse, as the textiles wear out and are thrown away, they add a solid, persistent source of PFOS to landfills.
This challenge highlights the pervasiveness of the C-F bond in consumer products and the need for solutions that manage chemicals both at the point of manufacture and during their use phase. At Project Clean Up (PCU), our methods are designed to treat these diffuse sources of contamination, proving that no application of a "forever chemical" is beyond our ability to manage.
