Power from Life: The Rise of the Dissolvable Biobattery

Welcome back to the Project Clean Up (PCU) weekly newsletter! We are concluding our "Total Deconstruction" series with the most difficult component to neutralize: the battery. This week, we introduce Probiotic Biobatteries.

Instead of heavy metals like cobalt and lithium, these batteries utilize specialized bacteria (like Shewanella) or enzymes embedded in paper-based substrates. These biological agents "eat" simple sugars to release electrons. . Because the energy source is biological, the entire battery is non-toxic and, in many cases, edible.

At Project Clean Up (PCU), our Lifecycle Standard for these power sources is the "Natural Digestion." When the device's task is over, the battery doesn't just stop working—it becomes compost.
