The Unfreezing Fluid: Ionic Liquids and the End of Space Grease

Welcome back to the Project Clean Up (PCU) weekly newsletter! As we wrap up our Extreme Frontier series, we address the lifeblood of any moving machine: the lubricant. This week, we introduce Ionic Liquids.

Unlike standard oils that are made of neutral molecules, Ionic Liquids are literally liquid salts—composed entirely of positive and negative ions but remaining fluid at room temperature (and far below it). . Because of their strong ionic bonds, they possess virtually zero vapor pressure. This means they will not evaporate or "outgas" in the hard vacuum of space or the interior of a fusion reactor.

At Project Clean Up (PCU), our Lifecycle Standard for these fluids is Electro-Precipitation. Because they are composed of charged particles, they are beautifully simple to pull out of an environment and recycle with 100% efficiency.
