The Replacement Trap: Confronting the GenX Challenge

Welcome back to the Project Clean Up (PCU) weekly newsletter! Last week, we explored the molecular architecture of MOFs, the molecular sponges helping us capture pollutants with extreme precision. This week, we return to the "forever chemical" frontline to discuss GenX (Hexafluoropropylene Oxide Dimer Acid).

GenX was developed to replace legacy PFOA in the production of non-stick coatings and high-performance fluoropolymers. While it was designed to be less bioaccumulative, it remains a fully fluorinated compound, meaning it possesses the nearly unbreakable carbon-fluorine bonds that define PFAS. Its smaller molecular size actually makes it more mobile in groundwater, allowing it to spread further and faster than the chemicals it was meant to replace.

At Project Clean Up (PCU), our mission is to break this cycle. We don't just look for "safer" alternatives; we develop the technology to dismantle the C-F bond itself. Whether it’s a legacy chemical or a modern replacement, our goal is the same: complete mineralization and a clean environment.
