The Breathing Wall: Passive Air Purification in the Sealed Box

Welcome back to the Project Clean Up (PCU) weekly newsletter! Today, we complete our challenge to the industrial design world regarding the modern apartment. We have solved the physical solids and liquids. Now, we must conquer the invisible gases.

Modern apartments are designed to be highly energy-efficient, which means they are tightly sealed. While this saves heating and cooling costs, it traps Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) off-gassing from pressed-wood furniture, synthetic carpets, and daily cooking. The 20th-century solution was the mechanical HEPA and carbon filter fan—another loud, energy-consuming appliance occupying precious floor space.

At PCU, our philosophy is that the infrastructure itself must do the work. We are pivoting to Photocatalytic MOF Coatings—turning the very walls of the apartment into a passive, silent respiratory system.
