The End of the Gas Leak: Magnetocaloric Alloys and Solid-State Cooling

Welcome back to the Project Clean Up (PCU) weekly newsletter! Last week, we explored how advanced Borated Glass is shielding the extreme heat of the upcoming fusion energy revolution. This week, we flip the thermometer and look at how we generate cold.

For over a century, human cooling—from the refrigerator in your kitchen to the massive HVAC units on commercial buildings—has relied on vapor-compression technology. This process uses chemical refrigerants (CFCs, HCFCs, and HFCs) that transition between liquid and gas to absorb heat. The problem? When these gases inevitably leak, they act as greenhouse gases that are thousands of times more potent than carbon dioxide. Project Drawdown consistently ranks refrigerant management as one of the most critical climate challenges on Earth.

This week, we are throwing out the compressor entirely. We are pivoting to Solid-State Cooling using Magnetocaloric Materials.
