The Industrial Ecosystem: When Waste Becomes a Commodity
Welcome back to the Project Clean Up (PCU) weekly newsletter! Throughout the summer, we have fundamentally redesigned the urban experience—from the micro-loop of a single apartment drawer to the frictionless, solid-state transit of the city streets.
But behind every city is an industrial backbone. The factories, processing plants, and commercial zones that produce our goods are historically the most egregious polluters on the planet. For centuries, industry has operated on a linear, isolated model: extract raw materials, manufacture the product, and dump the remaining byproducts into a river, a landfill, or the atmosphere.
Today, we launch a new series focused on the macro-economy of waste: Industrial Symbiosis. We are redesigning the industrial park so that it functions exactly like a biological forest—where the waste of one organism is the essential food for another.
